Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is located 120km south of Arusha, along The Great North Road highway, and is very popular for day trips from the town due to its accessibility by the the road and its nearness. Its Tanzania’s 6th largest with its area of 2,600 sq. km. Its best known for its large number of elephants. The park is named after Tarangire River which is the only source of water in the area during the dry season between June and September. During this period, thousands of animals migrate to Tarangire from Manyara National Park giving it the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem. The principal features of the park are the flood plains and the grassland, mainly comprising of various types of acacia trees, and a few scattered baobabs and African sausage trees.

The common animals found in the park are; zebras, wildebeest, lions, leopards, waterbucks, giraffe, elephants, gazelles, impala, gerenuk, lesser kudu and you may be lucky to spot the tree-climbing python for which the park is famous.
